THE CHICAGO METROPOLITAN AGENCY FOR PLANNING “PLAN”

Why plan? There’s an old saying that those who fail to plan, plan to fail. Communities plan to make things more rational and efficient. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) includes Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will Counties. They are putting together a long-range 30-year plan called GO TO 2040. A draft will be ready this spring, with implementation of the final plan to begin in October 2010. As a result, by 2040, the seven-county region can have better transportation, increased economic development, cleaner air and water, more-accessible jobs and housing, and other quality-of-life improvements, say leaders of the CMAP.

Regional Scenario (www.cmap.illinois.gov/2040scenario) establishes clear policy directions that CMAP will pursue in the plan itself, which is intended to guide growth and investment choices through mid-century and beyond in the seven counties. Based on two years of research, analysis and public input, the scenario tackles pressing issues that require coordinated solutions at the local and regional levels. Metropolitan Chicago’s future prosperity will depend on how successfully the region implements GO TO 2040 policies, strategies, and investments in land use, transportation, economic development, environment, housing, and human services.

Over the summer Alderman Dixon will be hosting community meetings which will allow residents the opportunity to comment on the draft regional plan recommendations that will impact the future of our city as well as our region.
